The day after surgery begin sitz baths (warm soapy water), three times daily for one week, for 20 minutes at a time.

Expect to experience some bleeding up to a week or two after surgery, especially with bowel movements. If bleeding is excessive (more than one pad saturated per hour), please call us.

Try not to let yourself get constipated. Eat a diet high in fiber and drink plenty of fluids. Take 30 cc's (one ounce) mineral oil for the first two mornings after surgery. Take a stool softener (colace) twice daily for one week then once daily until you are feeling well. Also, take metamucil or citrucel once daily to prevent constipation. If constipation occurs, you can take milk of magnesia. Follow the instructions on the label.

Make sure you use your prescribed pain medication as needed. For mild discomfort, you may use acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Follow the instructions on the label.

You should be able to return to work approximately 10 days after surgery and resume driving approximately 7 days after surgery, unless you are still taking prescription pain medications, still experiencing pain, or a lot of soreness.

Please call the office for the following signs and symptoms:

  1. excessive bleeding
  2. temperature above 101 degrees
  3. any new or worsening pain.
