   WHAT IS THE THYROID?

The thyroid is a gland, located in the middle of the neck, that produces chemicals (hormones), that regulate metabolism.

      WHAT IS THYROID DISEASE?

Thyroid disease can involve many factors. The thyroid can be under active, overactive, enlarged or develop lumps or nodules.

 HOW ARE DISEASES OF THE THYROID DIAGNOSED AND TREATED?

Blood tests are commonly performed to detect if the thyroid is under or overactive. Physical examination of the thyroid is helpful in the case of thyroid enlargement or thyroid nodules. A nuclear medicine study, called a thyroid scan, and ultrasound are also often performed.

             

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF THYROID DISEASE?  

Underactive (hypothyroidism)

Gain weight easily

Feel tired

Intolerant to cold   

Overactive (hyperthyroidism)

Lose weight without dieting

Feel jittery

Feel hot

                          

 

 

MYTH VS. TRUTH

"Thyroid cancer is not easily cured"

Actually, most forms of thyroid cancer are cured with surgery, followed by medical management.
