        WHAT IS A HERNIA?

A Hernia is a weakness or tear in the abdominal wall, that can occur in males and females of all ages, including children. A hernia can be congenital (a weakness in the abdominal wall present from birth) or acquired (due to a weakening of tissue over time).

HOW ARE HERNIAS   DIAGNOSED & TREATED?

The patient will need to be examined by a physician to determine the presence of a hernia. Once the hernia is identified, surgery to repair the hernia is usually recommended -- before complications develop of the hernia gets larger.

WHAT ARE SOME TYPICAL SYMPTOMS OF A HERNIA?

A bulge under the skin -- anywhere on the abdominal wall

Pain at the bulge site -- when lifting, coughing or straining

A dull, constant ache at the bulge site

MYTH VS. TRUTH

"Hernia surgery is quite painful and involves a prolonged recovery period"

Actually, hernia surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, with the discomfort and pain well controlled with oral pain medication. Most patient return to normal activities within two weeks following the surgery.
