 WHAT IS A HEMORRHOID?

A hemorrhoid is an area of tissue and veins found inside and outside the anal canal. Hemorrhoids help the body eliminate waste by swelling during bowel movements. Straining from constipation or vaginal birth / pregnancy can cause the hemorrhoids to enlarge and become irritated.

HOW ARE HEMORRHOIDS   DIAGNOSED & TREATED?

The physician will conduct a visual examination of the rectum, followed by a physical examination of the anal canal. Anoscopy (The insertion of a small tube -- to inspect the anal canal) may also be performed. If hemorrhoids are diagnosed, conservative therapy including high fiber diet, exercising more frequently, using a stool softener or ointments, and taking sitz baths (warm, soapy water baths), may be initiated. If these measures are not successful, the surgery will be discussed.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A HEMORRHOIDS?

Anal discomfort/pain

Anal itching/burning

Presence of bright red or maroon colored blood in the anal area, especially after bowel movements

MYTH VS. TRUTH

"Discomfort/pain from hemorrhoids is not easily controlled."

Actually, most patients respond fairly well to conservative measures -- with only a small percentage require surgical intervention.
